Make your family vacation budget friendly

Eating out less and buying fewer souvenirs are just two of the ways you can take a vacation without breaking your budget. Here are other tips.

1. Sign up for email alerts from airlines and travel websites about last-minute offers.

2. Get with family and friends to share the cost of a vacation rental instead of staying in hotels.

3. Look for lodging where kids stay free.

4. Bring light, easy-to-pack sleeping bags and let the kids sleep on the floor.

5. Once at your destination, rent bikes instead of a car.

6. Look for hotels with free breakfast.

7. Ask for a room with a refrigerator and microwave, and pack lunches when you go out.

8. See if your destination offers all-day public transit passes; many include busses, subway and light rail.

9. Determine which souvenirs — t-shirt, snow globe, stuffed toy— your child can have before you leave, to avoid impulse buying.

10. Check with AARP and AAA and other organizations for discounts on local attractions and shopping.

And don't forget, you can stay in touch and access your cash wherever your travels take you this summer! Just click here to find the closest CO-OP ATM near you.
